ABSTRACT: Tenement housing occupies a considerable part of the urban matrix in central areas of the city of Havana. Despite transformations carried out at different times, such buildings keep exhibiting highly inadequate living conditions. The present study forms the basis for
an investigation that is concerned with transformations to be undertaken in this type of buildings in different neighborhoods of the city. Our aim is to define significant conditions for proposing solutions, based on a review
of previous publications that explore their historical development, the types of classification adopted, the principal typological characteristics, and the trends in the processes of transformation. We conclude that any
study that aims at improving the conditions of tenement housing must consider essential issues such as urban conditions, socio-cultural context, and architectural habitability.
