METAMORFOSIS DE UN EDIFICIO COLONIAL
Abstract
La Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de
Guanabacoa es uno de los monumentos más importantes
de la arquitectura colonial cubana. Construido en 1721,
este templo ha sufrido numerosas transformaciones. El
presente trabajo tiene como objetivo fundamental la
descripción de los cambios más importantes
experimentados por esta construcción religiosa, sobre la
base de datos obtenidos de viejos documentos de archivo,
así como de una cuidadosa inspección in situ de los muros
y techos del edificio actual. Como resultado, se ha logrado
reconstruir la evolución arquitectónica de esta
construcción, destacado exponente de nuestro patrimonio
cultural.

The Parrochial Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción of
Guanabacoa is one of the most important monuments of
the Cuban colonial architecture. Erected in 1721, this
temple has undergone several transformations. The
present work aims at describing the most important
changes experienced by this religious construction, on the
basis of information obtained from old historical documents
together with a careful inspection of the walls and ceilings
existing now. As a result, it has been possible to
reconstruct the architectural evolution of this construction,
an outstanding example of our national heritage.
