Abstract

Study of four cases in Havana
Abstract: Higher education shows important
changes in the last decade in Cuba which has required the transformation of university facilities. This process has taken place in an empirical way by adapting the standards used for more than twenty years to the current demands
of higher education. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how these transformations were influenced by the impact of the information
technologies on the education process and the way this affects the functioning of buildings. Four universities in Havana City were taken as study cases; The Higher Institute of Art; the University of Havana; the University of Informatics and the José A. Echeverría Higher Polytechnic Institute. Current trends for the
architectural building programs in Cuba have been defined and recommendations for updating design standards in higher education institutions are also set.
Key words: Planning, design, universities, building conservation.
