Abstract
Matanzas, Cuba.
Abstract
This paper presents an overall view of the scarce development
of urban archaeology in the city of Matanzas, in Cuba, in
contrast with the historical centers such as Old Havana,
Trinidad, Camagüey and Santiago de Cuba, where an important
archaeological work related to the restoration and conservation
of the architectural heritage is carried out. However, in this
city, sporadic archaeological work takes place -occasionally to
address the specific problems of some buildings- whereas the
majority of places have been minimally intervened in or only
have recorded casual findings. In addition, the lack of policies
directed to the rescue of the urban archaeological heritage
and the secondary role of archaeology in historical contexts
are also shown.
Key words: urban archaeology, heritage, city of Matanzas,
Cuba.
