Julio Sagebien, arquitecto de Matanzas, ingeniero de Cuba
Abstract
Abstract
In 1818 two French architects, Esteban Best and Julio Sagebien,
built in Matanzas the first outstanding neo-classicist building of Cuba:
custom houses. It was the beginning of a new architectural era
under the influence of the neoclassicism. Best retired but Sagebien
started to build most of the city in the first half of the XIX century.
He also built important constructions in Havana like the Aldama
Palace and San José's warehouses. Besides, he made a very
remarkable work in the railroads. In spite of his excellent contributions
to architecture, his work is not very well-known. The purpose of
this article is to highlight his remarkable work, to correct that
undeserved exclusion.
Key words: Julio Sagebien, Matanzas, neoclassicism in Cuba.
