De la hidroeléctrica de Matanzas al poder franquista: Ramón Sarría y Calderón entre Cuba y España

The historiography of Cuban electrification has largely emphasized infrastructure and utility companies, while overlooking the engineers who made these developments possible. This article examines the career of Ramón Sarría y Calderón, the engineer responsible for the design of the first hydroelectric power plant in Matanzas, with the aim of reconstructing his professional biography and critically exploring the relationship between engineering, modernization, and power. The study is based on the historical analysis of Cuban and Spanish newspapers, official documents, genealogical records, and other primary sources. The findings demonstrate that Sarría played a pivotal role in the early electrification of Matanzas, while also revealing that his career was closely connected to business networks, labor disputes, and, later, the trade union apparatus of the Franco dictatorship. The study concludes that technological modernization cannot be understood independently of the power relations that shaped it, offering a new perspective on the individuals behind the history of engineering and Cuba's industrial heritage.
