Notes on the Study, Interpretation and Management of Cemeteries in Cuba

The study of cemeteries in Cuba has gained prominence in recent years; however, research remains fragmented and requires integration to guide heritage intervention. The aim of this article is to present findings relating to the preservation of these spaces through the study, interpretation and management of cemetery heritage. The research adopted a qualitative approach based on the critical analysis of documentary sources. The analytical-synthetic method was used to systematise knowledge, supported by a narrative review aimed at integrating theoretical and practical findings. The findings present four generic typologies associated with hygienist thinking and its evolution, key conservation case studies, and contributions to the interpretation of the Cuban cemetery. It is concluded that Cuba’s cemetery heritage is undergoing constant reinterpretation and requires the ongoing updating of its approaches to study, interpretation and management.
