Everyday Life and Temporality: Comparison of Color Schemes of Urban Spaces in Two Latin American Cities

Each culture interprets its environment chromatically, a condition that has been little studied in urban spaces at latitudes near the equator. This research aimed to identify chromatic and compositional variables in two sections of road in the cities of Medellín, Colombia, and Trujillo, Peru, in order to relate them to factors of livability and human well-being. Color palettes were defined from chromatic schemes obtained through pixilation of photographs, which were then consulted with experts residing in each city, to define compositional and chromatic characteristics associated with urban everyday life for three moments of the day. As a result, Medellín and Trujillo are rated as warm. In Medellín, respondents identified the variables of saturation and proportion. In contrast, Trujillo was defined by contrast and symmetry. It is concluded that chromatic studies establish a new methodology for urban analysis based on chromatic everyday life.
