The Architect José María Manuel Cortina Pérez: the Nolla Pavement of the Villa Morris
Keywords:
José María Manuel Cortina Pérez, Nolla ceramics, Villa Morris, Valencian bourgeoisieAbstract
When speaking of Spanish Modernism, one thinks of Antonio Gaudí and Cornet in Barcelona, although one should equally speak of José María Manuel Cortina Pérez, and Valencian Modernism of the late 19th century and early 20th century, in which Cortina was an essential pillar. Due to its originality and eccentricity, his work, winner of innumerable prizes in exhibitions and architecture competitions, has been ranked among the most relevant of its time. This article presents aspects of the life of this great architect, and analyzes some of the villas designed by him, in which, as in all his works, the best craftsmen of each guild worked. It takes special interest in the Villa Morris, and in the elaborate pavements that he designed and executed, which were produced by the Nolla ceramics factory. This work advocates for the protection of this little-recognized heritage so far.
