Abstract

The international and national debate on sustainable urban development and its urban planning has identified the relevance of culture as a frame of reference and of urban space as a key integrating factor. In this context, concerns and proposals have emerged about the capabilities of urban planning in these fields. The essay explores a set of ideas about the intersections of the cultural and spatial dimensions of the city in urban planning in light of their potential joint contribution to proactively guide sustainable urban development. The final reflections summarize a set of basic concepts that should contribute to the subsequent elaboration of the theoretical and methodological bases that will integrate the results of the research on the subject, recently started.
