Wind Protection of Asbestos-Cement Roofs in Houses
Keywords:
light roofs, asbestos-cement, constructive solutions, tropical cyclones and tornadoesAbstract
Light roofs, especially those made of asbestos-cement have been widely used in Cuba. Their use includes a wide range of building types, such as industrial facilities, warehouses, temporary facilities and that which is the focus of this paper: the one-story single-family home. These coverings have a high incidence of damage as a result of high winds produced by hurricanes and tornadoes. This paper presents a study of how the force of the wind acts on these buildings, the identification of points on the roof more susceptible to damage and a proposal of solutions - in addition to stipulations in the building code on the assembly of these roofs - to increase their resistance.
