Havana’s Houses of apartments, 1900-1940
Keywords:
workers’ housing, affordable housing, multi-family type of housing, Havana 1900-1940Abstract
Casas de apartamentos (houses of apartments) built for renting to lower-middle-class tenants and workers proliferated in Havana’s high-density areas during the first decades of the twentieth century. Despite its significant amount within the city, the Houses of apartments has not been identified as a multi-family building alternative and it is mentioned very little in the bibliography on Havana architecture. This led to the development of a historical investigation that aimed to identify and characterize this architectural type from the spatial and formal points of view. Documentary analysis methods were used, supported by field work and historical-logical analysis.. It is concluded that Casas de apartamentos constitute a multi-family type of housing that multiplied the traditional type of side patio house and that were decisive in the urban development of the urban sector studied.
