Transformation of the Domestic Heritage of Havana. Reflections from a Socio-Cultural Perspective

Housing built in Havana between 1950 and 1980 is transforming at an accelerated rate. The research aims to find out how the population values and modifies their own home in order to draw conclusions about the causes and consequences of these transformations. The ex post facto method is used to analyse and systematize information from announcements of purchase, sale and home exchanges in four municipalities of Havana in a period of three years, establishing cause-and-effect relationships between them. The value attributes assigned by the owners to their homes, and the main transformations carried out in them, are defined. It is concluded that the changes respond to the need to maintain the buildings, and also to spiritual motivations, inspired by new cultural symbols, which together with the lack of references and state control, has caused damage to the heritage of domestic architecture and the identity of the neighbourhoods.
