Academic Response to Challenges of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Portable Epidemiological Isolation Units

The article presents a project of emergency epidemiological isolation units developed in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic from pneumatic structures of icosahedral geodesic domes. This academic and research project was developed as part of the Architecture Program of the University of La Salle within the Lasallian Laboratory for the Construction of the Colombian Habitat (LAB-LAHC). The proposed isolation system currently benefits various regions of the country, providing, from the experimental architecture, solutions that today are used for vaccination in remote areas, and the care of other emergencies. This article shows details of the research and the development stages of the project after ten months of work. The experience is emerging as a university extension action to be replicated in the future for its contribution to solving real problems in society.
