DEL PATRIMONIO INDUSTRIAL AZUCARERO: EL CENTRAL HERSHEY
Abstract
La producción de azúcar ha sido por varios siglos el sostén de la
economía cubana. El central conforma una unidad urbana con
la comunidad que genera, creando un paisaje cultural,
característico de las zonas rurales de Cuba. Una
reestructuración económica del Ministerio de Azúcar ha
reducido sensiblemente el número de fábricas. El camino está
trazado para la desaparición de uno de los símbolos históricos
del país. Una de las instalaciones desactivadas es el central
Camilo Cienfuegos, antiguo Hershey. Su génesis y evolución lo
distingue del resto en el territorio habanero.
Es un fenómeno cultural y de identidad, digno de conservar.
Esto solo se puede lograr, propiciando la revitalización
económica y reanimación social del sitio. Son establecidos
criterios estratégicos para esa transformación, sobre la base de
respetar el significado que tiene a los efectos de la identidad
de la comunidad. El alto sentido de pertenencia y fuerte
arraigo de sus habitantes a sus orígenes, imponen la
pertinencia de reconocer los valores patrimoniales del Hershey.

Sugar cane production has been the support of the Cuban
economy for several centuries. The Sugar Mill and the
associate community constitute an urban unit. It has been
creating a specific cultural landscape within the rural zones
of Cuba. An economical restructuring of the Ministry of
Sugar has reduced the number of factories. The route is
traced for the disappearance of one of the historical
symbols of the country. One of the shut down factories is
the Camilo Cienfuegos Sugar Mill, formerly Hershey. His
genesis and evolution distinguishes it from the rest in the
Havana territory. It is a cultural phenomenon. For that
reason it is worth been conserving. This only can be
achieved with an economical revitalization and a social
reanimation of the site. The transformation of Hershey
Sugar Mill and the associated human settlement is based on
several strategic criteria that take into consideration the
cultural identity of this community. Strong feelings of
belonging and roots.
