Cooperatives for the Construction of Houses in Bejucal: Beginnings of Social Housing in Cuba

In Cuba, at the beginning of the 20th century, a group of workers in the tobacco industry formed cooperative associations to manage and execute houses to distribute among their members. This article presents the results of a historical investigation focused on the organization of cooperative associations that led to the production of wooden houses for workers in Bejucal. The field work allowed to quantify, qualify and describe the exponents that still survive in an approximate area of 21 urban hectares where 62 houses were located that were part of this construction process. A photographic record was made of those that retain the highest level of authenticity. Demonstrating the value of this process in Bejucal, and inserting it into the history of social housing in Cuba, will allow to complete knowledge on the subject and expand the existing historical chronology, thus constituting a contribution to the knowledge about the heritage architecture of the country.
