Urban Fragmentation. Parameters of analysis and evaluation of urban -architectural elements of the closed neighbourhoods
Keywords:
Urban fragmentation, social segregation, closed neighbourhoodsAbstract
The study of urban fragmentation is linked to processes of social inequality and the construction of physical and/or intangible barriers to separate one social group from another causing the proliferation of closed neighbourhoods. Objective: to develop a methodology to define specific parameters of analysis and evaluation of urban - architectural elements that characterize closed neighbourhoods. The use of quantitative-qualitative mixed research techniques (Information Data Sheets, surveys, ethnographic observation) defined the physical description of the elements of a closed neighbourhood, and the study of the socio-spatial impact of them on their surroundings. Specific variables and indicators were proposed to define the degree of socio-spatial fragmentation (walling, restricted access and social interaction) and the degree of vulnerability (psycho-environmental, socio-spatial, and morph-spatial) that occurs between the closed neighbourhood and its context. The methodology proposed helped to understand urban fragmentation processes from a perspective focused on the characterization of closed neighbourhoods.
