500 Years Looking for the Centrality of Havana’s Bay
ABSTRACT: After 500 years since its foundation in the Port of Carenas, the city of Havana, capital of Cuba since 1607, must face a redefinition of its relationship with the bay so that it can become the backbone of the city. This article analyzes the evolution of this relationship over five centuries, in which the bay has become marginal as a place of urban and industrial discharges, so that long ago it stopped smelling like the sea. From here, and based on some studies carried out, the aim is to recover the bay as an urban centrality, of a socially balanced and environmentally sustainable model.
