Havana's Chromatic Image
ABSTRACT: The present qualitative research addresses the chromatic perception of Havana in diverse phases of its development and the influence of buildings’ painting in the chromatic image of the city. The discussion involves if the only color scheme is sufficient to guarantee the rescue of the authentic hues of old buildings, and what can be done about it. The results of these investigations suggested that the colors applied to facades are different in each urban period. Therefore, when employing a color scheme it is necessary to take into consideration the date of construction of the most significant constructive phase of the building. It was also examined the presence of decorative mural paintings common in the 18th and 19th centuries given their differences in relation to the plain colors applied to facades. The current image of Havana is not perceived as it was in previous centuries.
