At the Crossroads of Two Worlds and Two Eras: El Vedado, “Garden Grid” of Havana
ABSTRACT: The paper highlights the importance of the project of El Vedado in the framework of the urban planning of the Nineteenth Century. On the basis of the analysis of the founding plan of El Carmelo and in contrast with other contemporary urban developments in the Ibero-American scenario, some of the keys in the configuration of what will be the great "Ensanche Jardín" (green grid) in Havana are unveiled. In this temporal and geographical context, El Vedado is identified as a fundamental forward-thinking project with great impact on the configuration of Metropolitan Havana, which stands out among a series of other projects from the second half of the 19th century that this research suggest categorize as “green grids,” born at the confluence of Europe and America: hybrid urban products of the cities of the Hispanic foundation, the European “Ensanches” (grids) and the Anglo-Saxon suburbs.
