Between Chronicles and Critics. Shantytowns in Havana Seen by the Press. 1930-1959
ABSTRACT: In Havana, in the late 1920s, appeared a number of improvised settlements, lacking infrastructure, known at the time as barrios de indigentes (shantytowns). They constituted the only housing option for the poor. While the city was expanding with new land being urbanized and buildings growing higher, increasing housing alternatives for the middle class, impoverished citizens were left destitute. This article is the result of an investigation of a historical nature, that reconstructs the process of conformation and consolidation of the neighbourhoods of homeless people in the capital, and focuses its attention on the reviews on the subject published in the Havana press between 1930 and 1959, which in addition to documenting how these settlements were established, reflects the different positions assumed towards them.
