ABSTRACT: The Moorish Tower is in Malecón in Guayaquil. It was built in 1931 to host a clock bought by the city in 1842. The purpose was to provide, as a modern industrial city should, a public view of daily time. Between 1842 and 1931 the clock had other residencies each of one became obsolete. The Moorish tower, also known as “Reloj público” got its popular name from the elements used in its definition, mainly the ornaments, all they representative of HispanicMoorish architecture. It’s this work’s goal to show that the tower, as well as other buildings, function as symbolic vehicles through their formal characteristics. In this case, the tower calls to people’s memory some facts about our country’s and Architectural history, as well as some ways of social perception upon architecture
