The McDonaldization of the City. Some Reflections from Costa Rica

This essay presents the problem of the irrationalities of the alleged rationality of modern urbanism; the dehumanization of the city and self-service architecture; the city as the sum and union of consumer objects; the homogenization-control of daily life, and the annulment of public space. The objective is to discuss the city, which shows the contradictions of the rationalization of its organization, in a capitalist economy that considers it the sum of consumer objects. In the discussion, ideas of the McDonaldization of society are confronted with phenomena of the Costa Rican reality. It is concluded that it is negative to continue thinking about the city-object, and about functions that can be ordered, and not as processes of socio-historical relations; nor will it lead to greater fortune to understand it as the sum of consumption spaces, where people are seen only as consumers.
