El diseño urbanístico de la ciudad de Matanzas cumple con la
premisa astronómica de acomodarse al recorrido solar para cada
día y mes del año, de modo que el Sol ilumina el Centro Histórico
alternando las fachadas del este y el oeste, en tanto las del
norte y el sur, en cada estación, permiten igual régimen de luz
según la orientación de cada calle. No existen documentos que
prueben el carácter intencional de esta particularidad, excepto
atender a la ordenanza real que indicaba, para el diseño de la
ciudad, un régimen de luz tal que el Sol llegara primero a la parte
urbana y después al agua. Aún cuando se tratara de un fenómeno
casual, la orientación angular de las calles norte-sur es paralela,
mientras que en la línea este-oeste siguen variaciones angulares
significativas que convierten al Centro Histórico en un enorme
reloj solar. La indicación real no podría ser cumplida, toda vez que
la ciudad está escoltada por ríos al norte y al sur y la bahía por el
este.

Abstract
The design of the city of Matanzas fulfills an astronomical premise
in order to make a path for Sun each journey for every day and
month of the year, so that the Sun illuminates the Historical
Centre alternating the facades of the east and the west, as
long as those of the north and the south, in each station, they
allow same regime of light according to the orientation of each
street. There are not documents that prove the intentional
character of this particularity, except assisting to the real
ordinance that indicated, for the design of the city, a regime of
such light that the Sun arrived first to the urban part and later
to the water. Still when it was a casual phenomenon, the angular
orientation of the streets north-south is parallel, while in the line
this-west they follow significant angular variations that transform
to the historical centre into an enormous solar clock. The real
indication could not be completed, all time that the city is escorted
by rivers to the north and the south and the bay for the east.
