The HDMI Cable War - Who's Winning?

por Rachel McAnulty (2019-04-03)

Big box retail stores are charging exorbitant prices for HDMI cables, but what is the reason? It's becoming well known that digital cables perform the same across the board whether they're $100 or $5.

The fact is that retail stores are still making sales off of these overpriced cables. People will do hours of research when buying a new competitively priced TV or Blu Ray player, but they overlook the need for cables. When they go in to buy a new HDTV, they don't realize the need to buy cables until they are ready to make the purchase. Then they just go ahead and throw in the HDMI cable and any other cables they need, giving retail stores a very large profit percentage.

The trick is to buy your HDMI cable online in advance. That way you will have all the cables you need, and have the comfort of knowing you just saved a boat load of cash!

Another advantage to buying HDMI and other cables online is the availability of cables as long as 100ft or more. HDMI cables as long as 100ft can be found for under $100. Retail stores only carry as high as 50ft and they run at around $299. The same applies for network cables as well, but that's another story.

The key is awareness. Retail stores are always going to have a market for selling overpriced cables for the people who forgot about the need for cables, or those impulse buyers. However, the more people that know that online is better for cables, the more people that will save money.
